In this story Mara tells Soma she can’t awaken because she is a woman, but she is not deceived. Mara the “devil” of Buddhist mythology, personification of self-clinging, deception and death, often comes “cloaked in invisibility”, as an intimate inner voice, when in fact he is expressing limiting notions which we have absorbed from society. Once we recognise Mara as Mara, that is, our thoughts as just conditioning, not the truth, then we are on the way to freedom. Our vow to awaken is the antidote to Mara’s lies.
