5 Reasons You’re Procrastinating and What to Do About It

If you have ever struggled to find success, or had a difficult time moving into the next level in your business or in your personal life, it could be due to limiting beliefs or perspectives that are putting a lid on your potential. In some cases, these beliefs could be mindsets you are not even aware of!
Our beliefs are like guiding lights that lead us and guide our decision-making process. How we view ourselves and the world around us determines how we react to both good and bad situations. In certain cases, our beliefs about what we deserve and what we are capable of can propel us to incredible heights. However, if our beliefs about ourselves put our abilities in a box, we can stunt our own growth and cause ourselves to miss opportunities we were qualified for.
How You Speak to Yourself Matters
There is both death and life in the power of the tongue. The words we speak to others can either bring them up or tear them down. This is something everyone knows and widely accepts – but did you know that the same is true of the words you speak over yourself? The constant running dialogue we have in our minds throughout the day serves as the quiet narration of our lives – and it plays a big role in our success or failure.
If you were to write down everything you thought about yourself in a single day, would it be mostly positive or mostly negative? When you take on a task at work, do your thoughts say, “I can do this; it is important!” Or do you think, “This is boring; it is not going to be a good day.” “I don’t like making prospecting calls, but I have to do it even though I don’t want to.” One sets a positive tone and one sets a negative tone – and the crazy part is, most of the time whatever we think becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If we approach our work with a bad attitude, thinking the day will not go well, chances are high that it will indeed turn into a day filled with grumpiness and frustration. On the other hand, if we look at the day with positivity and joy, we will likely head home after the day is done and realize that we accomplished quite a lot and had fun doing it, or at least realized it wasn’t so bad.
Your Limiting Beliefs Are Likely Ingrained Deeply in Your Subconscious
The way we view ourselves and our capabilities is something that starts becoming established in childhood, and then becomes solidified as we grow older. They often manifest themselves in the excuses we make when life does not go the way we want it to. Our limiting beliefs (or decisions) are hiding in the areas of life where we are producing results that you don’t want, or that we are not comfortable with.
These latent thought processes that lurk below the surface can hold you back from greatness by preventing you from reaching for new opportunities. Even if you have mastered what was mentioned previously, and your self talk is positive and consistently uplifting, your subconscious emotional responses to things may be setting you up for failure without you even knowing it.
“For example, if you’re bogged down with financial pressures, how do you feel about it? Anxious? Angry? Hopeless? If you stay with that emotion and acknowledge it for a moment, you’ll find the limiting belief right beneath it. For example, anxiety might be saying, ‘What will people think of me?’ Anger might reflect, ‘Life isn’t fair to people like me.’ Underneath hopelessness might be, ‘I’m just not strong enough or smart enough to figure this out.’” – Psychology Today
Fight Feelings with Facts
At the end of the day, our feelings and beliefs are just that: feelings and beliefs. Unless they are completely fact-filled, they have nothing concrete to stand on and can be changed if we have the time and willingness to adjust them or just decide to change them from this day forward. You have to be willing to evaluate every thought or emotion that we encounter, and challenge its validity if you want to reach the next level of business success or personal development.
Einstein is widely credited with saying, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” And it is true – it is crazy to continue living a self-limiting lifestyle without ever working to change the feelings and emotions that perpetuate your decision-making process. Just because you’ve always passed on a particular opportunity because you feel you are unqualified does not mean you need to pass on it the next time it comes your way. Just because you have always avoided conflict does not mean you need to continue putting off dealing with it just to maintain a false sense of peace. Challenge your assumptions and habitual way of doing things, and you may just find that you are even more capable than you realize.
To start making positive changes in your limiting belief systems, make a list of your thoughts and feelings as you go through the rest of your workweek. At the end of the week, take some time to honestly evaluate everything and pick one of two deeply ingrained assumptions, responses, or self-talk beliefs to consciously change in the next week.
