The Business Accelerator: Accountability | Productivity

Proven Business Success Systems for Business Acceleration. Make More Money, Work Less, and Enjoy Even Better Work Life Balance. If you want to accelerate your results, so you can enjoy your ideal business and life sooner rather than later, you came to the right place. Wouldn’t it be great if our ‘good intentions’ worked the way that we think they should? Not even enthusiasm guarantees positive results. There’s often a wide gap between our intentions and our actions. We fail to take the action necessary to be in alignment with our good intentions. This can be very frustrating. Good intentions don’t magically lead to good results. They are a start; however, they are unfortunately not enough. This is just the truth! We all can use a little accountability in our life to help us stay focused, so we can achieve all our goals in the time frames we desire. Anne Bachrach is author of Excuses Don't Count; Results Rule!, and Live Life with No Regrets; How the Choices we Make Impact our Lives; The Work Life Balance Emergency Kit; and co-author of Roadmap to Success with Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard. How the Choices We Make Impact Our Lives

Updated 2 months ago.

Should I turn left at the fork in the road or right? Should I agree to take on a non-ideal client that could be more work than waiting for an ideal client? Is this new job offer right for me or should I stay where I am? Should I have the fish or the beef? The choices we make impact our lives – sometimes in profound ways, others in subtle ways.

Sometimes, though, we feel overwhelmed at the variety of options ahead of us and we can’t, or won’t, make a decision. There is a song lyric that goes something like, “if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice.” I always find that profound especially at those times when I don’t make a decision, or can’t decide which decision is the “right” one.

If you’re faced with decisions regularly, and who isn’t, it can be overwhelming. We can then start to suffer from decision fatigue. This state can impact us in small, or large ways. For example, if you get out of bed in the morning and the first thing you’re faced with is a refrigerator or cupboard full of breakfast choices, your brain is going into overload before you’ve even truly started the day. Imagine you decided the night before, “I am going to have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast.” When you do this, you start your day without having to make a decision and can save your decision making for when you’re ready to start your workday.

There are some choices you will make in your life that have the potential to impact you in profound ways. Let’s explore three choices that I think might make a big impact:

1. The people with whom you surround yourself. The company you keep – professionally and personally – impacts how you see yourself, whether you’re encouraged or discouraged by them and the type of influence they may exert. Jim Rohn wrote, “you are the average of the five people with whom you spend the most time.” Who are your people and how do they impact you? Are they positive or negative? Their outlook can impact your outlook – either good or bad.

2. How do you spend your time? In your 24-hour day what do you do? Do you work? Care for children or aging parents? Do you have hobbies? Do you have pets with whom you spend time? When you’re not sleeping, what are you doing? You don’t have to be continually productive, but you do want to find ways to spend your days that make you happy. You can spend your time sleeping on the couch or surfing the internet or you could spend your time with friends, reading a book, learning a hobby, growing a business, etc.

3. How do you react to the world around you? In the Serenity Prayer it reads, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” I take this to heart when I have to tell myself to let some things go. There are things in the course of my day I have no control over, and I can decide to fight against it or accept it. If I am invested in something and can effect change, I just might. I know the “wisdom to know the difference” makes an impact on my emotions and my happiness.

Accept the fact that sometimes you will make bad decisions. Sometimes you will make a choice that you later regret. If you can go back and make a different choice, try that to see if a new outcome will make you happier. Know, though, that you cannot go back and rewrite your entire history – and would you want to? Your history has shaped who you are today, right now in this very moment.

The choices you make, both large and small, are the foundation of who you are. Your choices have brought you to this point in your life. If you’re happy, congratulations! If you feel the need to make better choices, now is the time to do just that! What are you waiting for?

Aim for what you want each and every day!
